The best view in Istanbul is a matter of taste. One of our strongest contenders is the Üsküdar shoreline, where you can look back across the water at the city. Rather than collecting viewpoints, spend time in one place. Come for a photograph, then put the phone away for a few minutes and simply watch.

Salacak: see the city from across the water

From Salacak you can see the Maiden’s Tower and the historic peninsula’s skyline. Walk along the shore to find an angle you like rather than stopping at the first viewpoint. This suggestion is for enjoying the view from land. Visiting the tower itself requires a separate plan based on current transport and admission arrangements.

Arrive before the sunset moment

Getting there before sunset gives you time to enjoy changing light. Clouds, the season and visibility affect what you see, so do not expect identical colours every evening. Before choosing a café specifically for its view, confirm the seating area and sightline. Bring a suitable layer if you plan to stay outside after the light fades.

Consider Kuzguncuk as a separate stop

If your schedule allows, add a short neighbourhood walk in Kuzguncuk. Do not assume Salacak and Kuzguncuk form one short, continuous stroll; arrange transport around your group’s energy. Leave residential doorsteps clear and avoid close photographs through windows. Giving residents space is part of enjoying a living neighbourhood respectfully.

A comfortable evening for families

Choose one neighbourhood for the afternoon and give the final part of the day to the shoreline. This can be easier than fitting in several stops. With children, agree on a return time and think ahead about food and bathroom breaks. If returning by ferry, check the departure pier and a suitable sailing during the day.

Before you go

  • “Most spectacular” is an editorial suggestion, not an objective ranking.
  • A waterfront outing does not include admission to the Maiden’s Tower.
  • Dress for wind or rain as well as the forecast temperature.
